El Yunque National Forest Parking Details
Parking at El Yunque National Forest is spread out all over the park, with small parking lots or off-road parking at major recreation areas.
Many of the parking areas in the national forest are along PR-191, the road you will drive through El Yunque.
In many parts of the park, parking is by the side of the road (in designated parking spots). You may also see cars parked along the shoulder of the road. In other areas, such as at the Yokahu Observation Tower or the Palo Colorado Information Center, you will find designated parking lots, albeit small.
Definitely do not park in “no parking” areas and if you choose to park on the shoulder of the road, make sure your vehicle is completely off the road to minimize the chance of getting a ticket.
Since parking at El Yunque is somewhat limited, visitation is managed by shutting down entry when main parking areas are full, and by limiting parking time at certain areas. For example, parking at Yokahu Tower is limited to 30 minutes.
Best Times for Easier Parking at El Yunque
Your best shot at finding parking at recreation areas within the forest you want to visit is to arrive early in the day (at opening time or as close to opening time as possible), or later in the afternoon if you are planning a quick visit.
Also, weekdays tend to be less crowded than weekend days, so it is easier to find parking.
